Why the names "Hazel" and "Fiver"?

While I was waiting for my baby buns to get big enough to come home with me, I scoured the internet looking for the perfect names for the pair of them. Romeo and Juliet? Bob and Linda? Daryl and Carol? Wilbur and Charlotte? Fred and Wilma? Hans and Leia?

No matter how many names I came up with or how cute or funny they were, I kept coming back to Hazel and Fiver (pronounced like the number 5 with an R at the end).  These names are from my all-time favorite book...Watership Down by Richard Adams. If you are not familiar with this book and are a lover of bunnies, you need to read this book.  Be forewarned though...while this book is listed as a Young Reader book, it is not really a children's book nor is it for the faint of heart where bunnies are concerned.  And I would say the same for the animated movie that was made from it as well.

movie: Bright Eyes sung by Art Garfunkel; it will make you cry!

The book is about a group of rabbits, led by Hazel (who happens to be a boy in the story) and his brother Fiver, who has had a fearful vision of their current warren being destroyed. Hazel and Fiver try to warn the other rabbits and when their warnings are dismissed by the leadership, they decide to leave.  Several other rabbits decide to join them and they set off on a journey to create a new warren in a place where they can be safe for generations to come.

This group of rabbits has many hardships along the way but prove just how smart, cunning, and brave these little creatures can be. The story will touch your heart. In other words be ready with a box of tissues at your side!

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, prince with a swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks, and your people shall never be destroyed."
